Spiritus, by Jessie Cox
https://www.jessiecoxmusic.com/
Recorded August 26, 2020
Spiritus explores the Dauist philosophy that one's physical self is an important component of one's spiritual self. The work also examines breathing as a spiritual idea, wherein  inhalation and exhalation are two contrasting ideas that are equally essential to making the whole.

The vocal and flute drones represent the inhalation; the microtonal scales that follow these gestures represent the exhalation.

Laconisme de l'aile, by Kaija Saariaho
Recorded March 6, 2020
Of Laconisme de l'aile, Ms. Saariaho writes...

"The possibility to move from secret whispers into clear, beautiful and 'abstract' sound was one of the starting points for Laconisme de l'aile, started in Freiburg and finished in Paris in 1982. Another important image on which I focused my mind was that of birds, not really their song but rather the lines they draw in the sky when flying."

Sequenza I for solo flute, by Luciano Berio
Recorded August 24, 2020
Luciano Berio composed the first of his Sequenzas in 1958 for flute with the intention of writing multi-voiced music for a solo instrument. On composing the Sequenzas, Berio wrote the following:

"Writing for a single-voice instrument today means that the composer must thoroughly re-establish the relationship between open and concealed, linear and melodic counterpoint from the ground up; this touches a central nerve-point of musical intention."
